About Wanaka

Wanaka is no longer just a favourite holiday spot for 'kiwis', its now grown into a premier destination for international travellers. Being situated on the shores of a crystal clear lake and surrounded by spectacular alpine scenery it's easy to see why.

Wanaka is known for it's quiet sophistication and relaxed atmosphere and is the perfect escape from those adrenaline-charged activities of Queenstown, which is an hours drive away.

With its dry seasonal climate, Wanaka is a year-round destination. Summer days are long and warm; autumn brings a rich tapestry of colour as leaves turn red and gold. In winter the days are crisp and sunny and a blanket of snow covers the mountains, melting in spring to reveal new life throughout the countryside.

Wanaka has something for everyone, whether you're into water or snow sports, walking or rock climbing, golfing or mountain biking, shopping or dining, it has it all.

Wanaka is the main gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, for many trampers and mountaineers this is a "must do", offering walks from two hours to technical ascents of magnificent peaks.

During winter Wanaka is a mecca for snow enthusiasts. The world-class ski resorts of Cardrona and Treble Cone offer superb down hill skiing suitable for absolute beginners to hard-core skiers. The Snow Park is popular with freestyle snowboarders and skiers alike and the adjacent Waiorau Snow Farm provides over 50kms of cross-country skiing. All of this is just a 30-minute drive from Copperwood.

Water based activities include jet boating, kayaking, cruises on the lake or simply swimming. There is also fabulous fishing to be had all year round.

Wanaka offers superb rock climbing and for when you can't get out on the real thing there is Basecamp Wanaka's indoor climbing wall.

High flyers can take scenic flights around Mount Aspiring, Mount Cook or the Milford Sound. Paraglide from Treble Cone or if you're looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush skydive from 15,000 feet!

If all this sounds too energetic there are also short strolls around Lake Wanaka and with over a dozen vineyards between Cromwell and Wanaka, wine enthusiasts will not be disappointed. Food lovers are also well catered for with a wide choice of cafés and restaurants creating innovative food from local produce.
